NIA launches probe against Hurriyat leaders for receiving money from Pakistan

Key Kashmir separatists are likely to be under investigation for allegedly receiving funds from Pakistan to foment violence in the Jammu and Kashmir region.
The National Research Agency (NIA) will meet to be questioned Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Naeem Khan, Javed Gazi Baba and Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate – four leading Hurriyat leaders he named in a preliminary investigation (PE).
PE is a precursor to a FIR (First Information Report), the first stage of an investigation.
The four people suspected of having received funds to pay people who committed violent protests and fires in the valley, where more than a hundred civilians have died since July last year.
“We suspect the money was distributed in the valley for various violent activities such as rock gliding and schools and government buildings of the torch,” said a high NIA, insisting on being identified because it was not authorised to speak about it.
Money, officials believe NIA, was moved by hawala – a system of money transfer across borders, which is banned in India. It is believed that the payment comes from the militant group Lashkar-e Tayyeba (LET) and strangers in Pakistan.
The NIA also check the allegations in an attack operation against some Hurriyat leaders led by the Indian news channel. The channel broadcast footage showing separatist seen talking to receiving money from Hafiz Saeed, the head of LeT and other Pakistani individuals.
“We issued an opinion on the information chain to provide memory devices and cameras used in the covert operation to check the content,” said the official.
The EP contends that the hawala route used to send money to Pakistan to sit agents in the Ballimaran and Chandni Chowk area in Old Delhi before being taken to the valley.
Violence in the Kashmir valley peaked after the assassination of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in July.
Kashmir is sought as a territory of Pakistan, a conflict that sparked the last war that the two nuclear powers have fought in 1999.
